Starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as an Adult? Here’s What to Expect in Your First Class
Walking into your first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) class can feel intimidating, but it shouldn’t. Whether you're looking to get in shape, learn self-defense, or challenge yourself mentally, your first day on the mat is the beginning of something truly transformative.
At IRONGRIP Jiu Jitsu in Raleigh, we specialize in helping adult beginners feel welcome and confident from the very first step.
1. You Don’t Need Experience to Start
You don’t need to be flexible. You don’t need to be in shape. You don’t even need to know what a “guard” or a “kimura” is. BJJ is built for learning through doing. Everyone starts at zero—and every black belt once walked into class just like you.
2. What to Bring and Wear
Wear comfortable workout clothes and flipflops. If you don’t have a Gi (the uniform), we’ve got you covered with a loaner. Bring water and a good attitude. That’s it.
3. How the Class Is Structured
You’ll start with warm-ups that include fundamental grappling movements—things like hip escapes, bridges, and rolls. Then you’ll move into the technique portion, where the instructor will demonstrate a move (like an escape or pass), then you’ll practice it with a partner.
You’ll never be thrown into something you’re not ready for.
4. Rolling is Optional (But Encouraged Later)
At IRONGRIP, we encourage new students to observe or lightly participate in rolling when they’re ready. There’s no pressure—just respect, patience, and a team that remembers what it’s like to be new.
Why People Stick With It:
You’ll start seeing small wins immediately. You’ll meet a tribe of people who want to see you grow. And whether your goals are fitness, self-defense, or stress relief—BJJ checks every box.
